Application of Laser Welding Method in Lithium Battery



As the core component of new energy vehicles, the quality of power battery directly determines the performance of the whole vehicle. Lithium battery manufacturing equipment generally includes front-end equipment, middle end equipment and back-end equipment. The equipment accuracy and automation level will directly affect the production efficiency and consistency of products. As an alternative to traditional welding technology, laser processing technology has been widely used in lithium battery manufacturing equipment.


Welding is a very important manufacturing process from the manufacturing of lithium battery cells to the battery pack assembly. The conductivity, strength, air tightness, metal fatigue and corrosion resistance of lithium batteries are typical battery welding quality evaluation standards. The selection of welding method and welding process will directly affect the cost, quality, safety and consistency of the battery.

1. Laser welding of battery explosion-proof valve

The explosion-proof valve of the battery is a thin-walled valve body on the battery sealing plate. When the internal pressure of the battery exceeds the specified value, the valve body of the explosion-proof valve will break to avoid the battery bursting. Continuous laser welding can realize high-speed and high-quality welding, and the welding stability, welding efficiency and yield can be guaranteed.


2. Battery lug welding

The electrode lugs are generally divided into three materials. The positive electrode of the battery uses aluminum (AL) material, and the negative electrode uses nickel (Ni) material or copper nickel plating (Ni Cu) material. Welding shall not only ensure the reliable connection between the pole lug and the pole post, but also require smooth and beautiful welds.


3. Sealing and welding of power battery shell and cover plate

The materials used for the battery electrode strip include pure aluminum strip, nickel strip, aluminum nickel composite strip and a small amount of copper strip. Using continuous laser welding thin shell lithium battery, the efficiency can be increased by 5-10 times, and the appearance effect and sealing performance are better.
