Principle knowledge of laser welding technology

Laser welding machine is to use high-energy laser pulse to locally heat the material in a small area. The energy radiated by the laser is directed to the internal diffusion of the material through heat transfer, and the material is melted to form a specific molten pool.


It is a new type of welding method, mainly aimed at the welding of thin-walled materials and fine parts, which can realize spot welding, butt welding, overlap welding, seal welding, etc., with high depth to width ratio, small weld width, small heat affected zone, small deformation, fast welding speed, smooth and beautiful weld, no treatment or simple treatment after welding, high weld quality, no porosity, accurate control, small focus spot, high positioning accuracy and easy automation.

The principle of laser welding machine can be divided into heat conduction welding and laser deep penetration welding.


Thermal conduction welding:


The surface to be machined is heated by laser radiation, and the surface heat is diffused internally through heat transfer. By controlling laser parameters such as the width, energy, peak power and repetition rate of the laser pulse, the workpiece is melted to form a specific molten pool.


Its characteristics:

The laser power is about 105w/cm2, the weld depth is less than 2.5mm, and the maximum depth width ratio of the weld is 3:1.


Deep penetration welding:


Generally, continuous laser beam is used to connect materials.

That is, the energy conversion mechanism is completed through the "Key hole" structure.


When irradiated by the laser, the material will evaporate and form a small hole, which will absorb all the energy of the incident beam. The temperature will reach about 25000°C, melting the metal around the hole.
