The Difference Between The Structural Design of The Battery Pack of Garden Tools and The Structural Design of The Power Battery Pack

With the increasing development of battery technology, battery pack (PACK) structure design has become one of the key technologies in many industries. There are many similarities in the structural design of the battery pack and the power battery pack for garden tools, especially in the basic design ideas of electrical connection, thermal management and safety protection. However, due to their different application scenarios and functional requirements, there are also significant differences in design requirements between the two. The differences between them are detailed below.

1. Different application scenarios and performance requirements

Garden tool battery pack: Mainly used for portable equipment, such as lawn mowers, electric scissors, etc. These devices require battery packs to be portable and capable of delivering power to short to medium hours. Therefore, the garden tool battery pack pays more attention to the lightweight design, low power consumption and medium battery life.

Power battery packs: Power battery packs are commonly used in vehicles such as electric vehicles or electric motorcycles to provide power. Requires a continuous and efficient power output. Its design needs to meet high energy density, fast charging and discharging capabilities, long battery life, and higher mechanical strength to cope with complex operating conditions.

2. Different design requirements

The design requirements of the battery pack of garden tools are different from those of the power battery pack, and the comparison of the design requirements of the two is shown in the following table:

Design Elements

Garden Tool Battery Pack

Power Battery Pack

Energy Density and Capacity

Smaller capacity, lightweight

High energy density, large capacity

Mechanical Structure and Strength

Waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, portable design

Waterproof, anti-vibration, heat dissipation, high-strength structure, rigorously tested

Thermal Management

Natural cooling or simple thermal conductive materials to meet basic cooling needs

Complex cooling systems such as liquid cooling or air cooling

Battery Fixation Method

Simple snap-in or bolted fixation for quick replacement

High-strength fixation with multiple weld points, riveting, or bolted connections

Battery Management System (BMS)

Simple BMS with basic power monitoring and protection

Complex BMS with thermal management, cell balancing, and other functions

3. Differences in material selection and manufacturing processes

Garden tool battery pack: The material selection is usually based on lightweight and cost control, and plastic shells are commonly used to reduce the overall weight and reduce material costs.

Power battery pack: The material selection is more diversified, and high-strength materials such as aluminum alloy and stainless steel are commonly used to improve the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of the structure. In addition, the manufacturing process of power battery packs is also more complex, and high-precision processing and assembly need to be ensured to ensure the safety and reliability of the battery.

4. Testing and inspection standards are different

Garden tool battery pack: testing and inspection is relatively simple, mainly focusing on the basic performance, safety and service life of the battery. The testing of garden tool battery packs usually includes waterproof tests, drop tests, and durability tests, among others.

Power battery pack: The testing and inspection requirements are more stringent, in addition to the basic electrical performance test, it is also necessary to carry out various environmental adaptability tests (such as high and low temperature tests, salt spray tests, etc.), vibration tests, impact tests and safety tests (such as pinprick tests, extrusion tests, etc.). These tests are designed to ensure the reliability and safety of the EV battery pack under a variety of complex operating conditions.

5. Charging is not the same as service life

Garden tool battery pack: Since it is mainly used for outdoor tools, the design pays more attention to portability and drop resistance. The battery capacity is small, the cycle life is low, and the charging time is short, which can meet the needs of short-term efficient work.

Power battery packs: Power batteries used in electric vehicles need to have high energy density and long range. Battery packs need to be designed with complex thermal management, structural fixation, and high mechanical strength to cope with harsh operating conditions, and to support fast charging and long service life.

Although there are similarities in the basic principles and some design concepts, there are significant differences in the structural design of the two due to their different application scenarios and functional requirements. The battery pack for garden tools focuses more on lightness, economy and convenience, while the power battery pack pays more attention to high energy density, safety and complex thermal management design.
