Electrode binder is one of the important auxiliary functional materials in lithium-ion batteries. Although it has no capacity and occupies a small proportion in the battery, it is the main source of the mechanical properties of the entire electrode. The electrochemical performance of the battery has an important influence. In addition to the bonding properties of ordinary binders, the electrode binder materials for lithium-ion batteries also need to be able to withstand the swelling and corrosion of the electrolyte, as well as the electrochemical corrosion during the charging and discharging process, and the working voltage of the electrode It remains stable within the range, so there are not many polymer materials that can be used as a binder for lithium-ion battery electrodes


At present, there are three main types of lithium ion battery binders widely used: polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) emulsion and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), in addition to polyacrylic acid (PAA), polypropylene Water-based adhesives with nitrile (PAN) and polyacrylate as the main components also occupy a certain market. PVDF is the first widely used electrode binder for lithium-ion batteries. It has strong electrochemical corrosion resistance and can be applied to cathode materials. However, PVDF needs to use N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent. The cost of solvent recovery is high and it will pollute the environment. Therefore, water-based SBR and CMC binders are usually used in graphite anodes with relatively low potential. Although the lithium ion battery electrode binder has a small proportion in the battery, but have an important influence on the homogenization process of the electrode slurry, the maximum coating thickness of the electrode, the flexibility of the electrode, the energy density and the cycle life of the battery etc. The ideal lithium ion battery electrode binder should have the following properties:


①Good solubility, fast dissolution rate and high solubility;

②The solvent is safe, environmentally friendly and non-toxic, and water is the best solvent;

③The molecular weight is large and the amount of adhesive is small;

④The viscosity is moderate, which is convenient for homogenizing and maintaining the stability of the slurry;

⑤Strong bonding force, the prepared electrode has high peeling strength;

⑥Stable electrochemical properties, no oxidation-reduction reaction occurs within the working voltage;

⑦Resistant to electrolyte corrosion;

⑧It has a certain degree of flexibility and can withstand the bending of the electrode and the volume change of the active material particles;

⑨Good conductivity and ability to conduct lithium ions;

⑩Wide sources and low cost.
